The biography of Bertel Thorvaldsen by Bianca Killmann for TAGWERC

Biography of Bertel Thorvaldsen

Bertel Thorvaldsen was a Danish sculptor. The Dane's works represent the art-historical epoch of classicism and he is still considered its most important representative in Denmark today. Born on November 19, 1770 and died on March 24, 1844 in Copenhagen, the artist lived and worked for a long time in Italy, one of the cradles of stone sculpture.

Illustrious clients

Thorvaldsen received a scholarship for his work "The Apostles, Peter and John Healing a Lame Man" and spent three years in Rome, where he also opened a studio, which was successful during his lifetime and became well known. Ludwig I, King of Bavaria, also became aware of him and commissioned works from him, as did other influential clients such as the Danish royal family and well-heeled citizens. The statue of Christ is considered one of Thorvald's best-known works, although it is rumored that he preferred to sculpt with clay rather than use a chisel. The Dane's most famous work is certainly the tomb of Pope Pius VII, which the Vatican commissioned from the Protestant and which is located in St. Peter's Basilica, which is visited by around 20 million people every year.

Spectacular sculptures

Thorvaldsen is said to have been celebrated as a national hero during his lifetime. His death is said to have been as spectacular as his sculptures. He died suddenly and unexpectedly during a theater performance in Copenhagen. The eponymous Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen is dedicated to the Danish artist. His tomb can be found here in the museum courtyard.

Inspiration for artists

Berthel Thorvaldsen has inspired a number of artists. Recently, the design duo Space Copenhagen was inspired by Thorvaldsen's poetic designs and delicate lines. The result is the Thorvald collection, a range of outdoor furniture for elegant terraces, picturesque balconies, iconic conservatories and sculpted gardens, available from TAGWERC.
