'White magic'

'White magic', 'black on white' or 'having a clean slate' are linguistic terms that associate the color white with purity, innocence, truth and truthfulness. White is actually the absence of color and yet it bundles the entire color spectrum. The 'bright nothing' has long since advanced from a former 'non-color' to a trend color.

Priests wore and still wear white as a symbol of purity and white also has the same symbolic power at baptisms and weddings. Workwear is sometimes white. On the one hand, white clothing is the easiest to clean again, and on the other hand, it looks particularly clean and pure and stands for perfection and reliability in our culture.

Just as white has become the trend color for new cars in recent years, white furnishings have also found their way into rooms. As a contrast to the muted colors, white is one of the key style elements in Scandinavian design and an important part of the hygge interior trend: white-stained or glazed wood, white or natural white furs, white table lamps and pendant lights, white furniture.

White reflects the light the most and is therefore particularly suitable for small rooms and those with little daylight. In particularly hot countries - such as Greece - houses have been painted white for centuries. On the one hand, white houses do not heat up so much in summer thanks to the reflection of the rays, and on the other hand, limewashed walls are highly diffusive and also keep out vermin. On the other hand, black absorbs light radiation and therefore absorbs more energy, which ultimately leads to an increase in temperature.

White has long since become socially acceptable in interior design and is considered classy, elegant, clean and cool. White walls create space and give rooms a touch of infinity. Simply everything goes with white and everything can be combined with white.

At the same time, white increases the contrast and really sets the scene for color and materials, for example. We see this with the Panthella light series consisting of table and floor lamps or the Flowerpot luminaire family. In combination with white marble, white also highlights the colored lacquered lampshade, such as with the SNOOPY table lamp from Flos.

White therefore reflects the light and does not emit any energy. Combined with black and skillfully used, white can highlight interesting accents. This effect was used by Designer like Victor Vasarely made use of this effect. He used color blocking in a variety of patterns, in which he also contrasted round shapes with angular forms.

Like Vasarely, Alexander Girard also used this strong accentuation in the design of his patterns and fabrics - some of graphic, some of ethnic origin. Be inspired by our following design objects in white.
