The Lakota symbol

The Double Triangles pattern is reminiscent of the symbol revered by the Lakota Indians of North America in their indigenous culture. The so-called 'Lakota symbol' is derived from the once powerful Indian tribe that lived in the Great Plains. Chief 'Sitting Bull' and 'Crazy Horse' were probably their best-known representatives. The Lakota symbol, the double triangle, was used by the tribe as a guide on journeys, as it stands for the sun and earth and the cycle of nature. While the upper triangle symbolizes the sun, moon and stars, the lower triangle stands for the earth.

Collector of ethnic folk art

Alexander Girard and his wife Susan, lifelong collectors of ethnic folk art, collected more than 100,000 artifacts from around one hundred countries on their extensive travels through Central and South America and Asia: Figurines, fabrics, jewelry, toys, decorative objects and much more, which they initially exhibited in their home in Santa Fe. In 1962, the Girards established the Girard Foundation for this collection, which, among other things, donated around 100,000 objects to the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe. Girard designed a new wing of the museum especially for his collection, as the donation increased the museum's holdings fivefold in one fell swoop. Girard's passion for collecting began in the late 1930s and only ended with his death.
