The Casa Calvet by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona.

Casa Calvet by Antoni Gaudí

Casa Calvet is a residential and commercial building at Carrer de Casp 48 in Barcelona, Spain, which Antoni Gaudí built between 1898 and 1900 for the textile manufacturer Pedro Mártir Calvet. There has been a restaurant of the same name on the first floor since 1994. Casa Calvet is often described as Gaudí's most 'normal' building, although it is the only one to have won an award. It may be less well known because it appears less conspicuous than Gaudi's buildings in general. However, the Calvet House is special in another way. Although it demonstrates Gaudí's ability to work traditionally and is attributed to his naturalistic creative phase, above all the project highlights Gaudí's skills as an interior designer. The furniture from the Calvet collection, which is still available in its original form at TAGWERC, is particularly noteworthy in this context.

Furniture by Gaudí

Gaudí's buildings have been preserved to this day and almost all of them can be visited, because it is not just their façades that are worth seeing: Antoni Gaudí was known for not just designing and decorating the building shell like an ordinary architect - Gaudí's unique architecture also included the design of the interior spaces and interiors such as furniture and home accessories. The best examples are his buildings Casa Calvet and Casa Batlló, whose unique furnishings are still available today from TAGWERC, the specialist for design classics. Most of the traditionally handcrafted furniture and home accessories produced to this day undoubtedly come from the Calvet house: with the Calvet chair, the Calvet armchair, the Calvet bench, the Calvet mirror, the Calvet coatstandthe Calvet door viewer, the spirit of Gaudí and Barcelona can be experienced within your own four walls.

Organic shapes and colors

Gaudí had his own unique and unmistakable style, inspired by nature as well as Catalan culture and folklore, which was clearly out of the ordinary. He often used organic shapes and colors reminiscent of nature and incorporated them into his designs in a unique and artistic way. He combined traditional techniques and materials such as brick, ceramics and wood. For the interior design of Casa Calvet, Gaudí responded to a particular preference of his client. Pedro Mártir Calvet was a passionate mushroom picker and so stylized shapes and silhouettes of mushrooms can be found in many places. Gaudí's works generally appear less like buildings and more like organisms that seem to adapt to their purpose. The mushroom as a living organism, which has long been classified as a plant, could not have been better chosen.

Imaginative façades - unique design language

Gaudí's works are special - there is no doubt about that. Whether exterior or interior, Gaudí's imaginative design and unique design language made him internationally famous and still attracts attention today. Buildings such as Casa Calvet certainly play a large part in the fact that tourists literally flock to Barcelona. With around 27 million visitors, the capital of Catalonia is the most popular city in Spain. For many tourists, a visit to Gaudí's buildings is an absolute must, as they are representative of 'Modernisme', the art movement at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century - also commonly referred to as Catalan Art Nouveau.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

It is therefore not surprising that 'Works by Antoni Gaudí' is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Spain, which includes a total of seven sites. In addition to Park Güell and the Palau Güell of the same name, the houses Casa Vicens, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló are also part of the World Heritage Site. Not forgetting the crypt in Santa Coloma de Cervelló, the crypt of the Sagrada Familia and the façade of the Sagrada Familia. If you are visiting Barcelona, you should definitely book your tickets online in advance to avoid additional waiting times. Even though Casa Calvet is one of the few buildings that cannot be visited, it still housed an area that could be visited until 2022: the Casa Calvet restaurant. Creative, fresh Catalan cuisine has been served here on the first floor since 1994.

At TAGWERC, Antoni Gaudí's interior designs from the Calvet house live on to this day and can even be conveniently ordered online at TAGWERC Design STORE .
