ROTH BED 455

by Alfred Roth, 1927

The Roth bed by Embru, sometimes mistakenly referred to as the Le Corbusier bed, is a purist design classic conceived in 1927 by Alfred Roth for the Le Corbusier houses in Stuttgart's Weissenhof Estate. The bed's design allows it to be easily moved into niches and corners. At the TAGWERC Design STORE, the Roth bed is available in three different sizes, two frame finishes, with or without a mattress, and with additional accessories. With the original neck and side rolls, the bed can be transformed into a daybed or sofa in no time. Here are the key features of the Roth bed:

Roth bed 455 - daybed design classic

The bed is characterized by its minimalist, uncluttered Bauhaus-style design, based on high-gloss chrome-plated steel tubing. It is now also available with a frame made of powder-coated steel in deep black. The headboard and footboard are also made of this material, lending the bed a clean, modern, and elegant aesthetic. The slatted base is simply hooked into the headboard and footboard without any additional tools. This simple yet ingenious construction creates the illusion that the base is floating between them.

Versatile use

Thanks to its design, the Roth bed can be used for sleeping, as a daybed, guest bed, and even as a sofa. Due to its design and versatility, the Roth bed is suitable for both private homes and commercial spaces such as hotels, offices, or commercial premises. It is particularly ideal when the office needs to provide both a seating area and a bed for on-call shifts or long workdays.

Three sizes – many options

The Roth bed also scores points for its versatility, as it's available in three different sizes: 90 x 200 centimeters as a single bed, 140 x 200 centimeters as a French bed or queen-size bed, and 180 x 200 centimeters as a double bed or king-size bed (European dimensions). The headboard and footboard can be selected in either high-gloss chrome or powder-coated finishes, while the bed frame is made of powder-coated steel. Integrated into the bed frame is a sprung slatted base with an adjustable headrest. The bed can be optionally equipped and complemented with a spring mattress, a large side roll, and a small neck roll. As mentioned previously, assembly requires no tools.

Our conclusion

Versatile, elegant, and airy – the Roth bed is a timeless design classic that can be used in a variety of ways. Bed, guest bed, daybed, and sofa – this purist and uncluttered place to relax and sleep fulfills all these functions. Thanks to well-thought-out construction details, no tools are required for assembly. Despite its inherent stability, the Roth bed is also easy for one person to move into position, which proves invaluable when cleaning allergy-friendly rooms. The original Roth bed is from Embru in all sizes as well as the original accessories at TAGWERC available.

Originally in love. Design objects by Alfred Roth at the TAGWERC Design STORE.

Alfred Roth was a proponent of the New Objectivity movement and modernism. The architect, designer, and university professor worked in Le Corbusier's Paris office, which is why his bed, designed for the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, was mistakenly referred to as the Le Corbusier bed. His Roth bed not only reflects the Bauhaus style but also represents Swiss precision and design.
