Calvet Hanger Wall-mounted coat rack

Apart from the main furniture, the Antoni Gaudí Collection of BD Barcelona from a series of smaller art objects that are particularly interesting due to their complexity and craftsmanship. One of these objects is the Calvet wall-mounted coat rack, designed for the house of the same name in Barcelona.

Measuring just 25 centimeters in length, this coat hook may well be the smallest piece of furniture Gaudí ever created. However, producing it required more complexity than any of his larger works, as a closer look at the details of the coat hook reveals.

The Calvet wardrobe It consists of a central, rectangular wooden body with curved edges. The surface is interrupted by three horizontal openings and connected in the middle by two brass-plated steel bands to form another pair of elements, also made of wood. Accessories such as scarves and umbrellas can be stored here. The brass-plated steel bands lend the wall-mounted coat rack a certain vibrancy and unexpected charm.

The former owner, a keen forest enthusiast and mushroom hunter, incorporated his passion into the interior design. Gaudí, for example, created a massive coat hook that replicates the shape of a mushroom, encircled and seemingly held in place by steel bands.

In 1975, BD Barcelona revived the furniture of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí. Furniture that Antoni Gaudí designed for his houses Casa Batlló and Casa Calvet The chairs designed by the designers are manufactured using the exact same elaborate production processes that were used to produce the first pieces. In addition to the chairs named after the houses, „Batlló Chair“" and "„Calvet Chair“", the "„Calvet mirror“and this „Calvet wall wardrobe“, it is above all stylistic elements such as door handles, door levers and peepholes, so-called „spies“, that make Gaudí’s unique „Modernisme“ design style, a Spanish variant of Art Nouveau, tangible in one’s own four walls.

The Catalan-born architect created a series of fantastic buildings in his hometown of Barcelona, which continue to attract millions of visitors every year. To complement his buildings, Gaudí created a range of interior design objects that reflect his design style, Modernisme.
