Valigia table lamp
The floor and table lamp Valigia was founded by Ettore Sottsass named after the Italian name for the word 'suitcase', because the red The lacquered metal arch on the shade of the Valigia luminaire is not just a stylistic device, it also has a practical function. Just like a briefcase or a suitcase, the Valigia table lamp can be quickly picked up, carried and used elsewhere. Sottsass' modern idea of mobility in the Valigia table lamp combined with excellent stability and the sophisticated design language in the design style of early postmodernism make the Valigia table- and floor lamp a unique artifact of design history.

Origin of the Valigia
According to Stilnovo Sottsass is said to have been visited by a friend in 1977 who was invited to a birthday party the following day and was looking for a unique gift. He is said to have asked Sottsass to make such a gift, whereupon he set to work that very night and created Valigia. In collaboration with the Italian lighting manufacturer Stilnovo, a design object ready for series production was finally created, the Valigia floor and table lamp.
Classicism and modernity
Two red lacquered metal arches flank the Valigia table lamp and form the framework that frames the upwardly curved lampshade. This diffuser is painted matt black on the outside, while the inside reflects the light optimally downwards thanks to its white coloring. An E27 socket allows the use of any light source, whereby a 7 watt LED light source with a color temperature of 2,700 Kelvin, which corresponds to warm white light, is already included in the scope of delivery. A one and a half meter long, black cable with switch and flat plug makes it possible to use the Valigia floor and table lamp flexibly.
Harbinger of postmodernism
The Valigia floor and table lamp lamp symbolizes Sottsass' typical formal language, which is so characteristic of the Milanese design group Memphis, formed around three years later, which broke with the prevailing rules of functionalism and shaped the design style of postmodernism. To a certain extent, the design of the Valigia luminaire anticipates this later design development and can therefore certainly be described as one of the first postmodernist lights .
Small architectures
The Valigia floor and table lamp measures 37.5 centimetres in height and 35.3 centimetres in width. The depth of the geometric-looking table lamp is 23.8 centimetres. "I continue to make small architectures, very small (...) a bit like monuments, a bit like tombs, a bit like temples abandoned by the gods, a bit like ruins of the ancient and unknown civilization that is said to have known so many things. It is said that they knew the axes, curves, intersections and perhaps even the nature of the cosmic paths followed daily by the private streams of atoms that make up our fragile body," says Sottsass.
Stability and flexibility
The Valigia floor and table lamp light has a straight bottom and is fitted with black rubber feet, giving it excellent stability. As an eye-catcher on a sideboard or shelf, on a landing or table, a console or windowsill - the Valigia luminaire can be used flexibly and repositioned as desired. For some, Valigia is reminiscent of a portico, while others associate it with the shape of a doctor's case or a travel bag. Whatever it is, Valigia casts a spell over us and it seems as if Ettore Sottsass gave it to us as a gift.

The Valigia table lamp was designed by
Ettore Sottsass
Ettore Sottsass was one of the most avant-garde designers of the 1970s and 1980s. He was a member of Studio Alchimias and founder of the Memphis Group in Milan. His designs break with convention and are expressive and colorful. Designs such as Ultrafragola characterize the Austrian-born designer.
