Mettsass MESA

Ettore Sottsass and BD Barcelona Design

The connection between Sottsass and BD Barcelona It originated in the early 1970s, when the architect and Designer He is said to have traveled to Barcelona regularly for love. This was the time when BD Barcelona was just forming and the paths of the BD founders and Sottsass crossed in the Catalan metropolis.

Mettsass, a masterpiece

The Mettsass table is one of the first objects produced by BD Barcelona – then still Boccaccio Design. To this day, Mettsass is manufactured using the original dimensions and materials. The table's design is reminiscent of the Postmodern style, for which Ettore Sottsass and are still known today as part of the Memphis Design movement. However, Sottsass conceived the Mettsass table, which resembles a graphic form, almost a decade earlier.

Sottsass's identification with his work

The strong identification with his work is reflected in the name of the table: So-ttsass becomes Me-ttsass. The first syllable "Me" stands for "Mesa," the Spanish word for "table.".

Features of the Mettsass table

The Mettsass table This is one of Sottsass's first works, foreshadowing his later postmodern design style, which he followed up with further designs nearly ten years later as part of the Memphis Design movement. The metal structure, consisting of flat steel sheets, is painted in "Signal Red" (RAL 3001). The glass top is the same color, creating a seamless unit with the base. The tabletop measures 110 centimeters in width and depth. The table is 73 centimeters high.

The design and its advantages

The Mettsass tabletop tapers towards the underside, resembling an inverted pyramid. The base is rectangular before culminating in a smaller pyramid, the plinth. This ingenious design offers ample legroom while ensuring maximum stability. This makes Mettsass the ideal table for breakfast for two, a workspace integrated into the room, a home office setup, or a striking statement piece in the living room or conservatory.
