Wings of the bat
"Pipistrello" is the Italian word for bat. This refers to the special design of Pipistrello lights by designer Gae Aulenti which have been manufactured by Martinelli Luce in Italy since the 1960s. With an overall size of 66 to 86 centimetres, the height of the table lamp can be varied. This is an advantage if you are looking for lighting that can be used flexibly and also offers design freedom when used in the same room. With a weight of around 10 kilograms, this luminaire is also stable enough for use in public spaces. While the reflector with a diameter of 55 centimetres always remains the same, the lacquered metal base is available in different colors. The Pipistrello 620 table lamp is fitted with four LED lamps with a light output of 5 watts each. The bulbs with E14 socket are supplied TAGWERC so that the light is ready for use immediately after delivery.
Form and function
Gae Aulenti, the creator of the Pipistrello lamp, was one of the most important architects and designers of the 20th century in Italy, if not the world. The Milanese woman had a special gift for the interplay of form and function and studied the properties of different materials and technologies over time, which she knew how to use for her works.
Inspiration from Brâncuși
Aulenti found inspiration in the works of the Romanian-French sculptor Constantin Brâncuși (1876 - 1957), among others. In connection with the design of the Pipistrello luminaire, Brâncuși's sculptural works of flying birds and his
polished sculptures that approximated the industrial form in their design. The 'Endless Column' in Târgu Jiu Romania, also known as the 'Column of Infinity' (1937-1938), deserves special mention in this context.
Museums and collections
The Pipistrello table lamp is undoubtedly one of Gae Aulenti's best-known works, which also stands par excellence for Italian design of the 1960s. The sculptural luminaire combines organic shapes with innovative materials and modern manufacturing technologies to create a timeless and eternally young design object. The design of the Pipistrello luminaire has inspired numerous artists, won design awards and is represented in renowned museums and collections all over the world.
