Bauhaus 2 Carpet
Study of the Bauhaus Director
Gertrud Arndt (1903–2000) was a pioneer in many respects. At the Bauhaus, Arndt completed a three-year apprenticeship as a weaver, culminating in a journeyman's certificate. During this time, she created the Bauhaus carpet No. 1 and the Bauhaus Carpet No. 2 (both 1924). Both woven works were produced only once. Significantly, Carpet No. 2 adorned the study of Bauhaus founder and director Walter Gropius, which also served as a reception room. To this day, Bauhaus Carpet No. 2 is considered one of the most important Bauhaus works ever created.
Blue-yellow-grey color nuances
Measuring 180 by 240 centimeters, the Bauhaus carpet No. 2 has a rectangular base shape. The pattern itself is composed of 192 squares in various colors. Blue–YellowShades of gray, arranged symmetrically to one another. Together, the arrangement resembles a painting in the style of Expressionism, the period between 1905 and 1925, whose works rebelled against the bourgeoisie of the German Empire and the First World War.
