Bedside Gun Gold by Philippe Starck for the Italian lighting manufacturer Flos is more than just a bedside lamp. The Bedside Gun Gold table lamp is both an art object and a political statement. Philippe Starck explains: “I wanted to create objects that remind us that our prosperity is based on the death of others.” The inscription on the base of the lamp reflects this political intention: “Happiness is a hot gun.” The printed crosses on the inside of the lampshade further reinforce this statement. The base of the lamp is shaped like a Beretta handgun, standing upright on its butt plate.
The Italian self-loading pistol, a top seller among handguns, has also been used by the American army under the designation M9 since 1985. Besides the Beretta, Philippe Starck used the silhouette of the Russian Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifle and machine gun for the Table Gun table lamp, as well as the M16 rifle for the... floor lamp Lounge Gun for his social criticism embodied in design.
Flos states that it donates 20 percent of the proceeds from the sale of its Guns lighting collection to the non-profit organization "Frères de Hommes Europe," which provides humanitarian aid in crisis areas, primarily in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The lamps in the Guns collection are political statements and works of art that denounce war, the arms trade, and the associated predatory greed. As such, the Guns lamp is on permanent display at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the museum of contemporary art in Paris.
Bedside Gun Gold, the table lamp from Flos' Guns lighting series, is based on a design by Philippe Starck from 2005.
