Components in equilibrium

Sapper's design approach isn't solely inspired by formal aspects, but primarily reflects his profound understanding of processes and functionalities. For Halley, Sapper had several models built to perfectly balance the weights of the individual components, ensuring the arm with the light source was movable so the light could always be positioned exactly where it was needed. Sapper also reveals another important aspect: "I wanted the base of the lamp to be as far away from its tip as possible, because my worktable is always cluttered. There's simply no space for a lamp base near me."„

Hardware and software

A square base, six joints, and a system of asymmetrical arms that can be rotated 360 degrees using handles at the ends comprise the hardware of the Halley table lamp. The lamp's software consists of advanced LED technology that combines energy efficiency with safety (low heat generation) and longevity – LEDs have a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours. Thanks to the LEDs, the light-diffusing head could be very small and was cooled by a fan integrated into a small rear section. "H = as in Halley," adds Sapper.

Touchless dimming system
