Portlligat Sunbed lounger
Sun lounger and sculpture in one
The Portlligat sunbed resembles a sculpture more than a garden lounger and undoubtedly bears the signature of the famous painter, who created it for his wife and muse Gala and himself. Head, torso, arms, and legs personify this design object, which has transcended the purely representational form. Nestled within this resting structure, Salvador Dalí and Gala found inspiration and tranquility in their garden on the Costa Brava. Then as now, the sunbed is handcrafted from iroko wood, also known as kambala wood. Iroko wood from the milicia tree is prized for its robustness and durability and can be described as extremely sustainable. The wood is resistant to fungi and insects, and its golden to chocolate-brown color develops a characteristic grayish patina over time. This makes the sunbed ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.
Surrealist furniture
Even in his early years in Paris, Salvador Dalí not only cultivated the company of painters, but also engaged in discussions with representatives of the visual arts in their various forms. Among them was Jean-Michel Frank, a furniture and interior designer already well-known at the time. Designer. Frank's furniture expertise gave rise to the idea of giving form to parts of Dalí's objects, immortalized in his paintings, and resurrecting them as artistic furnishings. The best example is the sculptural Bracelli. floor lamp, which Dalí also used in his house in Portlligat. From 1948 onwards, everything came together in Portlligat for Dalí, and it was here that he created garden furniture inspired by Surrealism and Cubism, such as the Portlligat Sunbed. Dalí had already applied for a patent for a bench in 1933. In the 1940s, Dalí designed a bar in California, and in the 1950s, the bar for the then-luxurious El Presidente hotel in Acapulco, Mexico.
Rare collectibles
In the 1970s, the paths of Salvador Dalí and Oscar Tusquets Blanca, architect and founding member of BD Barcelona. Around twenty years later, a team of experts led by Oscar Tusquets set about bringing to life the furniture that Dalí had designed with Jean-Michel Frank, some of which had never progressed beyond the prototype stage. This included the Leda chair and the low table from the painting "Femme à latête rose" (1935). Sculptor Joaquim Camps contributed to the project, and BD Barcelona Design assumed exclusive worldwide production and marketing rights. This also includes the Portlligat Sunbed.
Art object and design classic
In a conservatory, a studio, on a terrace, in the garden, on a lawn, or on the beach – the Portlligat Sunbed is both an art object and a design classic, inviting contemplation and use. One could almost believe that Dalí had just woken up and might return at any moment, so authentic and personified does the sight of the sunbed appear to some observers.

Salvador Dalí
Salvador Dalí is one of the most famous—if not the most famous—Spanish painters of the 20th century. The Catalan-born artist is considered a leading figure of Surrealism. His paintings fetch top prices and are represented in major collections. The artworks shown here are 3D reproductions of his paintings. Some are limited editions and reflect Dalí's ideas.
