Designography for Studio DDL
Studio DDL is a collaboration between the Italian architects Designer Gionatan (also Jonathan) de Pas (1932 to 1991), Donato d'Urbino (born 1935) and Paolo Lomazzi (born 1936). The design quartet formed as early as 1966 under the name De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi/Scolari in Milan, the birthplace of all four Designer, as Carla Scolari was also originally involved. In addition to furniture design, Studio DDL is dedicated to exhibition design, architecture and urban planning. Alongside the Achizoom design group, Studio DDL is one of the most important representatives of Radical Design in furniture design. The design of Studio DDL is represented in the TAGWERC Design STORE with the armchair Joe.
Nothing but air
Back in the 1960s, the Italian design trio created a armchair that used only air as a structural element. The inflatable armchair "Blow" uses a plastic shell that gives the air shape and seating function. Designed in 1967 and first presented in 1968, Blow has become a symbol of a changing design culture against the backdrop of a changing socioculture in the sixties and can be classified as a Pop Art style.
Radical Design
In the 1960s, a design movement called the Radical Period, Radical Time or Radical Design emerged in Italy. It reached its peak in Italy at the end of the 1960s / beginning of the 1970s. Studio DDL is considered one of the most important representatives of Radical Design. As a protest against functionalism, the studio of Gionatan de Pas, Donato d'Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi Design created objects such as the armchair Joe (1970), the Flap armchair bed and the Sciangai coat stand (1973), the Giotto stool and the tables Festival and Rio (1975), the Grand Italia sofa (1980), the Flou Flou sofa (1982), the armchair Campo (1984), the tables Cable (1986) and Cone (1988) and the chair Larry (1991).
Baseball glove for sitting
What must a ball feel like in a baseball glove? For anyone who has ever asked themselves this question, the de Pas / d'Urbino / Lomazzi design trio has been providing an answer since 1970. Joe, an oversized and padded baseball glove is just waiting to be dropped into like a ball. The Italian-born baseball player Joe DiMaggio, a superstar of his time and a baseball legend to this day, inspired the Milanese to create this extravagant armchair design, which is still elaborately handcrafted by Poltronova today.
