Designography for Studio DDL
Studio DDL is an association of Italian architects and Designer Gionatan (also Jonathan) de Pas (1932–1991), Donato d'Urbino (born 1935), and Paolo Lomazzi (born 1936). The design quartet formed in 1966 in Milan, the birthplace of all four designers, under the name De Pas/D'Urbino/Lomazzi/Scolari, as Carla Scolari was originally also part of the group. Besides furniture design, Studio DDL is dedicated to exhibition design, architecture, and urban planning. Along with the design group Achizoom, Studio DDL is one of the most important representatives of Radical Design in furniture design. Studio DDL's design is associated with... Nothing but air
As early as the 1960s, the Italian design trio created an armchair that used air as its sole structural element. The inflatable armchair "Blow" utilizes a plastic shell that gives the air shape and seating function. Designed in 1967 and first presented in 1968, Blow became a symbol of a changing design culture against the backdrop of a shifting socio-cultural landscape in the 1960s and is associated with the Pop Art style.
Radical Design
In the 1960s, a design movement emerged in Italy known as the Radical Period, Radical Time, or Radical Design. It reached its peak in Italy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Studio DDL is considered one of the most important representatives of Radical Design. As a protest against functionalism, the studio of Gionatan de Pas, Donato d'Urbino, and Paolo Lomazzi created design objects such as the Joe armchair (1970), the Flap armchair bed and the Sciangai clothes rack (1973), the Giotto stool and the Festival and Rio tables (1975), the Grand Italia sofa (1980), the Flou Flou sofa (1982), the Campo armchair (1984), the Cable (1986) and Cone (1988) tables, and the Larry chair (1991).
Baseball glove for sitting
What must it feel like to be inside a baseball glove? For anyone who's ever wondered about this, the design trio de Pas / d'Urbino / Lomazzi has been providing an answer since 1970. Joe, an oversized and padded baseball glove, is just waiting to be dropped into it like a ball. The Italian-born baseball player Joe DiMaggio, a superstar of his time and a baseball legend to this day, inspired the Milanese designers to create this extravagant armchair, which is still meticulously handcrafted today. Poltronova is manufactured.
