AMOEBA

by Verner Panton, 1970

The Amoebe lounge chair was part of Verner Panton's legendary Visiona 2 exhibition. The artfully curved chairs, atmospherically arranged amidst countless ring lamps, were developed in two versions: the Amoebe and the Amoebe Highback. Vitra relaunched the Amoebe in 2006, faithfully recreating the original design. Two years later, the Amoebe Highback followed. Both seating models are extremely comfortable and available from the design and interior specialist TAGWERC in the two available fabrics, Tonus and Volo, and in all colors.

Amoeba Lounge chair

Tonus, an extremely robust and stretchable fabric, is manufactured by the Danish fabric specialist Kvadrat. The Tonus fabric consists of a blend of virgin wool and Helanca. The latter provides its exceptional elasticity, making Tonus the perfect upholstery fabric for organically shaped furniture such as the Amoebe, Amoebe Highback, or... Living Tower, This is a defining characteristic of almost all of designer Verner Panton's upholstered furniture. In the 1960s, Danish textile designer Nina Koppel combined natural virgin wool with Helanca, an extremely elastic yarn made from industrially produced polyamide filament. The Tonus fabric proves to be the ideal choice for organic forms such as the Amoebe lounge chair and the Amoebe Highback.

They were part of Verner Panton's legendary Visiona 2 Exhibition from 1970 at the Cologne Furniture Fair, now imm Cologne, featuring the Amoebe lounge chairs. The artfully curved chairs, atmospherically arranged in the setting, were designed by the Danish Designer Verner Panton Conceived in two variations, the Amoebe chair features a backrest that ends at the shoulders, while the organically shaped back of the Amoebe Highback extends over the head of the sitter. This unique design creates a space within a space, fostering a sense of security. This quality is particularly beneficial in open-plan living/dining areas, lofts, and studios, and also creates quiet zones in public spaces such as libraries, foyers, lobbies, and reception areas.

The amoeba, the single-celled organism with a variable shape, served as inspiration. An organically shaped plastic shell, integrated into a foam cushion, defined the form at the time. From 1970, the upholstered furniture company Hukla in Gengenbach, Baden-Württemberg, and the French company Airborne International in Montreuilsous-Bois produced the Amoebe series, though initially without the plastic core. Vitra has been producing the seating furniture as a redesign with an even more comfortable backrest since 2006 and 2008, respectively.

Today, the amoeba is only handmade after an order has been placed and taking into account the customer's wishes. Tagwerc This exclusive and unique seating object comes in its original form with a certificate and includes a felt glide set.
