Amoebe highback lounge chair
Tonus, an extremely robust and stretchy fabric, is produced by the Danish fabric specialist Kvadrat. The Tonus fabric consists of a mix of virgin wool and Helanca. The latter provides the special elasticity that makes Tonus the perfect upholstery fabric for organically shaped furniture such as the Amoebe, Amoebe Highback or Living Towerwhich in itself characterizes almost all upholstered furniture by designer Verner Panton. In the 1960s, Danish textile designer Nina Koppel combined natural new wool with Helanca, an extremely elastic yarn made from industrially produced polyamide filament. They were part of Verner Panton's legendary Visiona 2 The Amoebe lounge chairs were presented at the 1970 exhibition at the Cologne furniture fair, now imm Cologne. The artfully curved armchair, atmospherically arranged in the ambience of a large number of other designs, were created by the Danish Designer Verner Panton was conceived in two versions. While the backrest of the Amoebe ends at the shoulders, the organic-looking back section of the Amoebe Highback extends over the sitter's head. This special form of design creates space in the room and at the same time provides a feeling of security. A feature that is particularly beneficial in open-plan situations with integrated living/dining areas or lofts, studios and also creates quiet zones in public spaces such as libraries, foyers, lobbies and reception areas.
The amoeba, the single-celled organism with a changeable shape, was the inspiration. An organic-looking plastic shell, integrated into a foam cushion, provided the shape at the time. From 1970, the upholstered furniture company Hukla in Gegenbach, Baden, and the French company Airborne International in Montreuilsous-Bois produced the Amoebe series, but then without a plastic core. Vitra has been producing the seating furniture as a redesign with an even more comfortable back shell since 2006 and 2008 respectively.
Today, the Amoebe Highback is only made by hand after the order has been placed and taking the customer's wishes into account. Tagwerc supplies this exclusive and unique seating object in the original with certificate and including felt glider set.
