LIVING TOWER

by Verner Panton, 1969

The Living Tower, literally translated as "residential tower," is one of Verner Panton's most spectacular seating objects. This unique spatial sculpture in a fantasy landscape style evokes memories of the psychedelic living spaces of the Visiona 2 exhibition at the Cologne Furniture Fair. The Living Tower is perfect for lounge-style living rooms, trendy bars, and deluxe children's rooms. Vitra manufactures this luxury piece of furniture, available with four different seating cabins.

Living Tower

Modular living spaces were Verner Panton's favorite subject. Living Tower, First presented in its completed form as part of the Phantasy Landscape at Visiona, the Living Tower utilizes the three-dimensionality of space. This organically shaped living sculpture, composed of two joined elements, can be used on four levels. All seating options are ergonomically designed and therefore exceptionally comfortable. The mutually facing arrangement of the individual seats actively encourages communication. A birch plywood frame provides stability to the Living Tower. The polyurethane foam cushion is covered with fabric, delivering the desired comfort.

Verner Panton He himself found it dreadful to be confined to a seated position all evening. His Living Tower offers complete liberation from this constraint. The seating object shattered all conventions when Panton presented it to the world in the late 1960s. To this day, the Living Tower sculpture remains unique in the world of furniture. Its further development, the Living Sculpture, has been part of the design collection of [the museum/institution] since 1991. Centre Pompidou in Paris / France.

Once conceived, Verner Panton incorporated the Living Tower into numerous interior designs throughout his life. The Varna Palais restaurant and his private villa in the canton of Basel-Stadt are two further examples. The Living Tower's production has a varied history: built by Herman Miller in 1969 and 1970; produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark until 1975; Stega Polstermöbel in Switzerland manufactured it in 1997; and since 1999, the Living Tower has been produced by Vitra.
