ONION

by Verner Panton, 1977

The Onion pendant light in white by Verpan consists of lacquered metal slats with a white surface. As a redesign of the Yamagiwa designed by Verner Panton in 1977, the Onion pendant light was introduced 30 years later. Made up of a multitude of white lacquered metal slats that are assembled vertically, its bulbous shape is reminiscent of an onion. In addition, the individual strip segments cover the core of the lamp, the light source. In this way, the slats are illuminated differently and create a mysterious depth. Artistic effect: the light is reflected and illuminates its surroundings in a unique way.

Onion pendant light

With a diameter of 45 centimetres and a height of 69 centimetres, the small Onion pendant light (Onion Small) looks great on its own above round or square tables up to around one meter in diameter or side length. Above large dining tables, a long bar or a counter in the kitchen area, this luminaire is recommended in a group of two, three or more Onions.

The big onion pendant light (Onion Big), with a diameter of 65 centimetres and a height of 90 centimetres, is ideal for use in high corridors, staircases or foyers. Used as a solitaire and suspended low down, the Onion Big skillfully sets the scene in one area of the room. With a maximum wattage of 150 watts and in combination with a dimmer switch, the sculptural luminaire quickly becomes a cozy mood light.

Verner Panton drew his inspiration from botany, among other things. In addition to the Onion luminaire family and the Pantop light series, which is modeled on a bellflower, Panton was inspired by mushrooms such as the Panthella table- and floor lamp and the New Wave table lamp inspire.

The slats are arranged in three levels around the centrally positioned light source. The inner lampshade created in this way skillfully conceals the light source without taking away too much light. The outer shell is formed by differently curved, concave segments. Their alternating arrangement around the light core lends the Onion pendant light from Verpan its inimitable shape and effect. Even when switched off, the Onion pendant light is attractive and unique. When switched on, the pendant light gains many times its three-dimensionality.
