Coveted design classics
Over the course of its 120-year history, the traditional Swiss company has worked with renowned designers and architects to produce designs based on the original drawings from the past to the present day in Switzerland. The resulting pieces of furniture have since become internationally coveted design classics. Here is an overview of some of the well-known Designer designers who have created collections for Embru.
Werner Max Moser
The collaboration with the Swiss designer Werner Max Moser (1896-1970) began in the 1930s. Moser created designs for Embru in both the 1930s and 1940s. Together with Rudolf Steiger (1900-1982) and Max Ernst Haefeli, Moser is known as the architectural firm HMS Haefeli Moser Steiger. His works are still part of the Embru collection today and are undoubtedly design classics.
Alfred Roth
Another outstanding architect and Designer who worked with Embru is Alfred Roth (1903-1998). The bed he designed is both a furniture legend and a design classic and is known as the Roth Bed 455 or Roth Bed. Then as now, it is manufactured by Embru according to Roth's original design drawings. The Roth bed is now available not only as a single version but also as a bed for two sleepers.
Max Ernst Haefeli
The Swiss architect Max Ernst Haefeli (1901 - 1976) is considered an important representative of 'Neues Bauen' in Switzerland. His Werkbund housing estate Neubühl and his so-called 'Hochhaus zur Palme', one of Zurich's first high-rise buildings, are well known. Haefeli designed furniture for the Stuttgart Weissenhof Estate developed by Mies van der Rohe and also created furniture for Embru. chairs and tables. Like his architecture, his furniture designs are design classics and characterized by clear lines and timeless design. Embru designates the Haefeli garden tables as models 1134, 1122, 1104 and the chairs as Haefeli chair 1020 and Haefeli chair 1021.
Gustav Hassenpflug
The German architect Gustav Hassenpflug (1907-1977) came from Düsseldorf and studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. He worked together with Marcel Breuer. At Embru, he introduced a numerical system that characterizes the furniture and is still used today. A true Embru design classic is the Hassenpflug chair.
Wilhelm Kienzle
As a trained carpenter, furniture draughtsman and cabinetmaker, Wilhelm Kienzle (1886-1958) had the tools to become a furniture designer. It should be emphasized that his designs did not bow to the dictates of fashion. His furniture and home accessories are extremely durable and have become design classics thanks to their special lightness and independence. The demountable Kienzle bookcase model 2722 is a prime example of his design style.
Huldreich Altorfer jr.
Huldreich Altorfer Junior (1911-1980) was a commercial employee at Embru from 1934 and deputy director from 1942. At the end of 1944, he founded Metallmöbelfabrik Altorfer AG. In 1971, Embru took over the company and with it the rights to Altorfer's designs: Altorfer deck chair model 1158, Altorfer chair model 1140 and Altorfer armchair model 1141. Popularly known as 'Spaghetti-chair', the Altorfer designs are among the best-known and most popular Swiss designs and adorn gardens and terraces on Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.
Functional design
The practical value of Embru furniture can be experienced from the very first use. Each piece is carefully designed to meet the demands of everyday use. This maxim is reflected in every piece of Embru furniture, whether it is a garden lounger, a school chair, an office table or a nursing chair - functionality is always the focus.
Form and Optik
However, Embru furniture is not only functional, but also visually appealing. The company works with renowned designers to create timeless classics that you will never tire of and that can be combined and rearranged again and again. From clear lines to harmoniously curved proportions - design is a key feature of the Embru design philosophy.
