Throughout its 120-year history, the traditional Swiss company Embru has collaborated with renowned designers and architects, producing its designs in Switzerland based on original drawings. The resulting furniture pieces have become internationally sought-after design classics. Here is an overview of some of the well-known designers who have created collections for Embru.
Werner Max Moser
The collaboration with the Swiss designer Werner Max Moser (1896–1970) began in the 1930s. Moser created designs for Embru during both the 1930s and 1940s. Together with Rudolf Steiger (1900–1982) and Max Ernst Haefeli, Moser formed the architectural firm HMS Haefeli Moser Steiger. His works are still part of the Embru collection today and are undoubtedly design classics.
Alfred Roth
Another outstanding architect and designer who collaborated with Embru was Alfred Roth (1903–1998). The bed he designed is both a furniture legend and a design classic, known as the Roth Bed 455. Roth-Bett It is called the Roth bed. Then as now, it is manufactured by Embru according to Roth's original design drawings. The Roth bed is now available not only as a single bed but also as a bed for two sleepers.
Max Ernst Haefeli
The Swiss architect Max Ernst Haefeli (1901–1976) is considered an important representative of the New Objectivity movement in Switzerland. His Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl and his so-called "Hochhaus zur Palme" (High-Rise at the Palm), one of Zurich's first high-rise buildings, are well-known. Haefeli designed furniture for the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, developed by Mies van der Rohe, and also created designs for Embru. chairs and tables. Like his architecture, his furniture designs are design classics, characterized by clean lines and timeless design. Embru designates the Haefeli garden tables as models 1134, 1122, and 1104, and the chairs as Haefeli Chair 1020 and Haefeli Chair 1021.
Gustav Hassenpflug
The German architect Gustav Hassenpflug (1907–1977) came from Düsseldorf and studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. He collaborated with Marcel Breuer. At Embru, he introduced a numerical system for identifying the furniture, which is still in use today. The Hassenpflug chair is a true Embru design classic.
Wilhelm Kienzle
As a trained carpenter, furniture designer, and metalworker, Wilhelm Kienzle (1886–1958) possessed the skills of a furniture designer. It is worth emphasizing that his designs did not bow to the dictates of fashion. Their exceptional lightness and distinctive character made his furniture and home accessories extremely durable, and they have since become design classics. The Kienzle Regal Model 2722, a collapsible bookcase, is considered a prime example of his design style.
Huldreich Altorfer Jr.
Huldreich Altorfer Junior (1911–1980) worked as a commercial employee at Embru from 1934 and became deputy director in 1942. At the end of 1944, he founded the metal furniture factory Altorfer AG. In 1971, Embru acquired the company and thus also the rights to the Altorfer designs. Altorfer deckchair model 1158, The Altorfer chair model 1140 and the Altorfer armchair model 1141. Popularly known as the 'Spaghetti Chair', the Altorfer designs are among the best-known and most popular Swiss design designs and adorn gardens and terraces on Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.
