Flos
Visionary lights design
Flos is a manufacturer of exclusive lights, which are offered in three different collections: Flos Architectural, Flos Home and Flos Outdoor. The Italian company was founded in 1962 by Caesare Cassina and his business partners Dino Gavina and Arturo Eisenkeil as a manufactory in Merano, in the heart of the South Tyrolean Alps. In the vicinity of Trauttmansdroff Castle with its legendary terraced gardens, Flos dedicated itself from the very beginning to the realization of visionary lighting designs, initially of Italian Designer. In an exclusive and very close collaboration with the design brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, lights classics such as the Arco arc lamp, the Toio ceiling spotlight, the Relemme pendant lamp and the Tacciathe table lampwhich is reminiscent of a searchlight.
Flos Home
lights To this day, the Flos Home collection includes these and other design classics by Tobia Scarpa and Gino Sarfatti as well as designs by contemporary designers such as Philippe Starck, Ron Gilad, Jasper Morisson, Antonio Citterio, Michael Anastassiades, Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec or Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, which have the potential to become design classics of tomorrow. The Flos Home collection is absolutely unique in terms of variety and design and undoubtedly forms the heart of the Flos lighting world.
New location and triumphant success
When Sergio Gandini joined the Flos company in 1963 and took over the management of Flos, the company headquarters were moved from Merano to Berscia. Here, in Brescia, a good two hours' drive away, Lake Garda and, above all, design-savvy Milan are not far away. The perfect location for the triumphant advance of Flos lights. More of a light laboratory than a lights manufacturer - Flos clearly stands out from the mainstream and its competitors. The innovative approach and experimentation with new materials and techniques have resulted in lights such as Fantasma by Tobia Scarpa, Traxacum 1 and Traxacum 2 (also Cocoon Traxacum) by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and their lights design Viscontea from 1960.
Daring and important design awards
But Gardini's courage also plays its part in the fact that lights such as the pendant lamp 2097/50 by Gino Sarfatti, designed back in 1958, or the floor lamp Luminator by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni from 1954 are still being produced today. The boldness pays off and Flos has received several awards in the course of its remarkable company history. In particular, the "Compasso d'Oro" prize awarded in Italy plays a central role. Flos receives it for the lights Drop, Luminator and Parentesi as well as for the company's successful history.
Flos Architectural
Ceiling lights, table lamps, floor lamps, pendant lights and wall lights - the Flos collection provides design lights for every application and location. The merger with the Spanish company Antares (named after the brightest star in the constellation Scorpio) created the Flos subsidiary, Flos Architectural, in 2005. The focus is on the development and production of modern (basic) lighting solutions and lighting concepts for private homes and professionally used spaces such as educational institutions, offices, surgeries, museums, trade fairs, hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. However, it is not only the Flos Architectural collection that benefits from the merger. The Flos Home and Flos Outdoor collections also benefit from the latest LED technology.
Flos Outdoor
"Today, as never before, we have the task of finding the synthesis of emotions, technology, poetry, needs, messages and aesthetic and political values," explains Piero Gandini, then Managing Director of Flos, on the launch of the Flos Outdoor collection. The aim is not only to change technology, but also society itself and our behavior, both in the public and private sphere. This idea is translated into lights such as the KTribe F3 floor lamp by Philippe Starck, the Fenestra light sculpture by Flos, the Casting and Casting Concrete floor lamps by Vincent van Duysen, Landlord Ground, Landlord Soft and Landlord Spot, Climber and Camouflage - all by Piero Lissoni, to name but a few.
Skills and imagination
Incidentally, Flos comes from Latin and means "flower". At this point, we would like to conclude with a quote from Gandini, which illustrates the philosophy of Flos Outdoor, representative of Flos Architectural and Flos Home: "We must go beyond our abilities and imagination to improve people's lives ... with the same poetry of the prehistoric flame of a bonfire under the stars."
As an official distribution partner of Flos, the TAGWERC Design STORE only sells licensed originals with a guarantee of authenticity.
