Bellevue bathhouse

Heritage protection meets Duravit design

Bellevue Beach in Klampenborg, Denmark, around ten kilometers north of Copenhagen, is legendary. It was the young architect Arne Jacobsen, still in his early 1930s, who won the tender to build a seaside resort complex. As part of an overall concept, Jacobsen designed and realized everything from work uniforms, bathing and changing cabins, entrance tickets, kiosks and rescue towers. Arne Jacobsen's architectural and design jewel has now been restored and adapted to today's needs: The Bellevue men's changing room has been transformed into a beautiful bathhouse.

Bellevue changing room becomes a wellness oasis

A streetcar ticket to the so-called 'White City' once cost 30 Øre for a direct return journey, including entry to the 700-metre-long sandy beach, the equivalent of less than five cents. So it's no wonder that locals flocked to Bellevue beach in the summer. To this day, the area around the so-called Bellavista settlement with the Bellevue Theater (1932 - 1935), for which Jacobsen also designed the Bellevue light series, is a popular destination in the summer months. More than 90 years after its inauguration by the then Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning, the local men's changing room was transformed into a wellness oasis

Arne Jacobsen's design style

Jacobsen's design style has been adopted by the German sanitary specialist Duravit and designed with elegant countertop basins from the Happy D.2 Plus series. The gentle curves of the Zencha mirror series support the flow of chi, the power of life. Equipped with a touch-free sensor switch and mirror heating, the light frame of this series is infinitely adjustable. Modern floor-standing toilets from the ME by Starck series pick up on the special architecture of 1932 and blend harmoniously into the overall picture despite the great difference in age.

Relaxing on Bellevue beach

The extensive and careful renovation work in the listed building has now been completed and the premises for changing clothes have been transformed into a wellness oasis, a place of well-being for body and soul. Sauna, infrared sauna, sauna shower, sea bath, yoga and a café now invite you to relax on the beach. Of course, Jacobsen's unmistakable style has been retained in the building, as evidenced by the hand-painted numbers on the wardrobes of yesteryear, for example
