Proud of its tradition and craftsmanship, Sika Design says of itself: "Our passion and understanding of rattan go back decades. We've been around long enough to call ourselves Scandinavia's oldest manufacturer of rattan and wicker furniture."„
reeds and straw
The company's story actually begins in 1940 when a man named Ankjær Andreasen started crafting flower stands, lampshades, baskets, and other small decorative furniture for interiors from rushes and willow. In Mossø, near Horsens in Denmark, raw materials were scarce due to the war and high unemployment – as was the case in many places. Flexibility and ingenuity were essential, and so Ankjær Andreasen utilized readily available, surplus, and sometimes even free raw materials such as reeds from the marshes and straw left in the fields after the harvest. When the war ended, willow baskets were even being made in the Horsens state prison. In the 1950s, rattan furniture was added to Andreasen's repertoire. In the 1960s, teak furniture was introduced, supported by a metal frame, which can still occasionally be found at auction houses today.
Traditional craftsmanship
Materials like rattan and teak were imported from Asia, and Ankjær Andreasen traveled there regularly to acquire materials for domestic production. The exceptional craftsmanship of the basket weavers in the Far East eventually led Ankjær Andreasen to relocate his production to Malaysia in 1972. Today, the company manufactures in Indonesia, and its name has also changed. The name Sika Design is inspired by the sika deer, a species of deer native to Asia. These animals are delicate, alert, and exceptionally agile. When threatened, sika deer flee into swamps and water, as they are excellent swimmers.
Passion for rattan furniture
In 1983, Ankjær Andreasen handed over the management of his company to his son Knud. Nevertheless, the company founder could be found at the factory daily for his so-called 'inspections' until shortly before his death in 1997. "On my tenth birthday, my father allowed me to attend a trade fair where Sika-Design was exhibiting a range of rattan furniture," recalls Knud Andreasen. "That day I knew I wanted to be part of his company, and my passion for rattan furniture began."‚
Specialization and certification
Production takes place in Indonesia using traditional handcrafting techniques. The raw material is hand-harvested rattan canes from the rattan palm. These canes are interwoven with individual fiber strands. Their unique structure makes rattan canes particularly light and flexible. Before being woven into armchairs, sofas, footstools, and hanging chairs, the rattan is steamed for a few minutes. Basket weavers then process it into rattan furniture. Sika Design states that the entire production process is certified according to the SA8000 standard and complies with the ISO14001 standard. This certification is intended to guarantee the highest level of ecological and social sustainability.
