Stilnovo

Design made in Italy

Stilnovo is an Italian lighting manufacturer, originally from Milan, and an official partner of TAGWERC. The TAGWERC Design STORE website carries a curated selection of lights from the original Stilnovo collection. All other lights from Stilnovo and spare parts are of course also available from TAGWERC on request or directly at Showroom.

In 1946, on July 1 to be precise, Bruno Gatta founded Stilnovo in the heart of the Lombard metropolis of Milan. The very next year, Stilnovo takes part in the 8th Milan Triennale and launches a comprehensive communication campaign in the industry's biggest magazines. Two years later, in 1949, his brother Paolo joined Stilnovo. Paolo Gatta had just finished his studies and in September of the same year, the Gatta brothers founded Stilnovo SRL with a capital of 400,000 lire. This laid the foundations for a company history that rapidly took off and made the company known beyond Italy's borders as a reference point for modern lighting. In addition to the Triennale in Milan, Stilnovo took part in international exhibitions, such as an exhibition in the Norwegian capital Oslo in 1951.

Collaboration with leading designers

Stilnovo, from the Italian 'stil novo' - 'new style', has dedicated itself to the production of modern lighting solutions. The Stilnovo lighting collection is in tune with the times. At the same time, the Italian lighting manufacturer benefited from the 'boom economico', the era of the so-called economic miracle. In the 1950s and 1960s, Italy's connection to the world market was at stake. At Stilnovo, it was also the beginning of collaboration with the leading designers of the second half of the 20th century.

Stilnovo Design Timeline

In 1957, the brothers Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni designed two pendant luminaires under the name Saliscendi for the new Chamber of Commerce in Milan, which were manufactured by Stilnovo. In 1965, Giovanni Luigi Gorgoni designed the Buonanotte luminaire, which was manufactured by Stilnovo in the newly opened factory in Linate. In 1969, Joe Colombo 's Bazooka luminaire family was nominated for the Compasso D'Oro. In the same year, Antonio Macchi Cassia designed the Gràvita luminaire for Stilnovo. At the beginning of the 1970s, things went from strength to strength and new classic luminaires were added every year: Topo, Minitopo and Triedro (all 1970) by Joe Colombo, Lampiatta by the design trio De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi (1971) and Gae Aulenti and Livio Castiglioni designed the Trepiù luminaire system (1972). In 1977, it was Ettore Sottsass who, with the radical design of his Don and Valigia luminaires, would provide the impetus for the Memphis design group in the later 1980s. De Pas, D'Urbino and Lomazzi design the Fante lights, which can be easily aligned thanks to a reflector on the head of the luminaire that resembles a woman's hat. In 1981, Gae Aulenti and Piero Castiglioni designed the portable Minibox luminaire. Finally, the Luna lamp by Shigeaki Asahara from 1985 rounds off the classic portfolio at Stilnovo.

40 years of success

For more than forty years, Stilnovo has been reaping success and occupying a leading position in the lighting scene. Stilnovo Design is represented in the world's leading design museums. lights Icons by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Livio Castiglioni, Piero Castiglioni, Gae Aulenti, Joe Colombo, Antonio Macchi Cassia, Ettore Sottsass Junior - to name but a few - contribute to Stilnovo achieving a cult status that is not lost when Stilnovo initially ceases production in the 1980s

Linea Light Group goes Stilnovo

In 1988, this thread was initially broken when Stilnovo suddenly ceased production. In 2019, the Italian Linea Light Group discovered the Stilnovo brand and picked up on a design story that began at Stilnovo over 70 years ago. But not without incorporating Linea Light's outstanding expertise in the field of LED lighting into Stilnovo's production. In other words: the reissue of the important lights icons is realized true to the historical original concepts, but manufactured from modern materials, equipped with LED technology and in compliance with today's safety regulations. The design classics are joined by lights with a contemporary design.
